When I drive, I make sure that I pay attention on the road not just for the sole reason of defensive driving but to spot newly opened restaurants or cafes that are new to me. I’m on a continuous pursuit of happiness and trying out different food places is definitely one of my life’s greatest pleasures. I worked for almost 4 years in Boni, Mandaluyong and driving around Pioneer made me discover a few nearby cafes/restaurants that are worth the visit. Some of them are Mozaic Living, Joey Pepperoni, The Giving Cafe, etc. Tasty Tucker, being one of the few, already caught my attention few years back, but I never had the chance to actually pay a visit and it’s probably because of the not-so-inviting facade of the cafe. So when Zomato invited me over, it immediately rang a bell and since I was free that time, I said YES!
Tasty Tucker is attached to HMR which makes it the instant go-to place to get some grub after shopping. When you enter the cafe, it will give you some rustic vibes as it is surrounded with a lot of wood materials. Wood tables, wood ceiling, etc. The lack of sunlight suits the laid-back atmosphere of the place and even though it’s standing right beside a busy road, you won’t even feel that there’s a chaos going on outside.
Meat pie is considered iconic in Australia and it was even described as their “National Dish.” It is a hand-sized pie containing minced meat, gravy, mushroom, among others. Tasty Tucker takes pride in making this Australian dish popular and be tried by Filipinos, offering different flavours and sizes. Lucky us, we got to try the 1) Steak & Bacon Cheese Pie and 2) Steak and Mushroom Pie. These were my instant favourites that time and I still clearly remember how many slices I had. How I wish I could visit Australia soon and try their Meat Pies in their very own soil!
More than the meat pies, Tasty Tucker also bakes a lot of different pastries – muffins, loaves, cheesecakes, etc. They highly recommend to consume it right after purchase since these are all fresh out the oven. My best pick is the Cheese Muffin, which I find very light and not overwhelmingly cheesy. For the cheesecake, the Cherry Streusel is the crowd’s favourite, though mine was the Oreo. 😛
Note: Muffins are on a Buy 1 Take 1 deal on Wednesdays!
I used to cafe-hop a lot and so I noticed that Revel Bars are widely being offered in many cafes, thus making it my first item of choice when I see it displayed and available. But these Revel Bars from Tasty Tucker need more justice as it barely tasted like a real one. It was bland and was lacking in the chocolatey feeling. I hope they revamp this dessert ‘coz I wouldn’t mind dropping by next time and give it another try. 🙂
Their menu evolved over time and they have added some dishes Filipinos love, such as onion rings, buffalo wings, burgers, and pizzas. These were the usuals but the not-so-usual was the BBQ dipping sauce paired with the Onion Rings, which I find really good! It was flavourful and perfect, though I was kinda biased simply because I love anything that has BBQ in it. I feel like any bad dish becomes more tolerable if you put BBQ in it, gets? LOL. That’s how much I love BBQ!
Note: Pizzas are on a Buy 1 Take 1 deal every day from 1PM to 9PM until March 10, 2019!
There’s no Filipino I know that wouldn’t go gaga if they were served with Baby Back Ribs on the table and some people actually say that, “Nobody can feel bad while they’re eating it.” This Hickory Baby Back Ribs from Tasty Tucker is not your typical tender, fall-off-the-bone, finger-lickin’ good which is what most of you are looking for on this dish, hence obviously not one of the crowd’s favourite, but I beg to differ! Not sure if it was just me but I was arguing with my friends that the part I got was actually really good and full of meat, though I kinda agree in the part that it needs more flavour and that they need to put more Hickory BBQ sauce in the ribs.
Tasty Tucker is one of the few decent cafes where employees around the area can eat during lunch breaks. They have a lot to offer in their menu and it’s almost impossible to run out of options, from pastries to American/Filipino/Italian dishes. Worth the try? Yes! Which one to try? I would say the Meat Pies and other pastries! And after ignoring this cafe for almost 4 years, I therefore conclude this blogpost with the quote, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” 🙂
